Za’atari Cinema
Cultural life inside the largest Syrian refugee camp
The Za’atari refugee camp, located in the North of Jordan, near the Syrian border, is the largest Syrian refugee camp in the world. As of 2026, it is home for 50 000 people.
Where there is life, there is a need for culture. It is with this belief that the French Institute in Jordan and UNICEF together with the French Embassy, and the Royal Film Commission reopened a cinema that had lived there for a few months. It was first established in 2018 thanks to the French association Lumière à Za’atari.
After remaining closed for four years, facilities deteriorated due to a lack of use and maintenance. In 2024, following renovation works, the Za’atari cinema, only cultural facility available in the camp was accessible again. To go further, a cultural and educational programme was developed and implemented. The cinema is now a dedicated venue for learning, exchange, and creative expression within the Zaatari community.
Film screenings
The cinema offers children living in the camp the opportunity to experience cinema as a collective and shared cultural activity. The programme places particular emphasis on French animated films, often without dialogue such as Flow (made in 2024 by Gints Zilbalodis), in order to showcase French expertise and creativity, while also including selected Jordanian and Arab productions such as Saleem (2023, Cynthia Madanat Sharaiha). Between the reopening in July 2024 and June 2026, more than 20,000 children have attended a cinema screening.
Artistic trainings with French and Jordanian professionals
A training programme has also been developed with artistic workshops for children provided by French and Jordanian professionals. At the same time, training sessions on film facilitation have been provided to educators from UNICEF’s Makani centres, strengthening their capacity to support children’s engagement with cinema. Through the Young Cinema Ambassadors programme, young refugees also benefited from trainings aimed at fostering critical thinking and analytical skills.
Documentary filmmaking workshop
A professional documentary filmmaking training programme was conducted bringing together 13 participants for an immersive, hands-on experience that took them through every stage of film production — from the initial concept and scriptwriting, through shooting and directing, all the way to editing and final delivery.
Thanks to the support of the French film school CinéFabrique participants benefited from academic training and high-level international industry standards.
Far from a purely theoretical exercise, the programme placed participants in real-life, professional conditions, challenging them to work as a cohesive team and make creative decisions collectively. Under the supervision of Jordanian filmmaker Jumana Saadeh, in collaboration with the production company Imaginarium Films (known for Inshallah a Son), they expressed their feelings and vision of the life inside Za’atari camp.
The collaborative dynamic that emerged was at the heart of the experience: participants brought their individual perspectives, talents and stories to the table. Their dedication, resilience and creative investment throughout the process led to the creation of three short movies.
